If FML were a football team, then Sir Alex Ferguson might refer to the current period as ?Squeaky Bum Time?. Over recent weeks, we?ve spent a lot of time researching the first year of Football Manager Live. We?ve been looking, in detail, into what?s gone wrong, where mistakes have been made, where we can improve and, most importantly, what we need to do now to fulfil the massive potential that we all believe Football Manager Live has.

Since launch, we?ve learnt many lessons about how Football Manager Live needs to be run in order to make it a successful online game so, over the next couple of days, we?ll tell you exactly how we aim to get there and as well as being as open and honest as possible about some of the issues we encountered. We?ll also be on the forums to answer your questions and we?ll also make an appearance on the GameworldOne Podcast.

The RoadMap

Whilst reading this, it?s important you don?t forget the roadmap. The changes we laid out in the summer blogs are all still on the radar: Youth Academies, reworking of the club reputation system, CPU Challenges, Reward Points and the 3D Match Engine are all still coming and we still have faith that they will go a long way to helping solve the age-old problem of not being able to compete late on in a gameworld as well as providing a lot more ?to do? when you?re logged in.

The roadmap is an important tool for us and we?ll use it a lot more in the coming year. It sets out where we intend to take the game and it lets you know when major new features and changes are planned. It also helps ensure that we do manage to keep development constant and that new releases are made available every few months.

Cancellation survey

Each time someone cancels, they are asked to fill out a short survey. We review these regularly and collate them for internal distribution.

From launch to August 2009, the results were as follows (this is just the top six):

? Need to devote too much time to be good - People on here all the time/not fair against hardcore/can't play once a week to be successful.
? Lack of things to do - Boring/ I want more to do/ repetitive/ I won everything now what?
? Prefer FM - Don't like online/no real teams/not realistic
? Wanted to start again and no new world - I want to start again/new world please/
? Frustration at losing - Why do I lose/win 2 games then lose 10 /ME is bad/too hard to win against AI
? Empty GW - No one online/All my friends have left/ no one to play during the mornings

From August till 16th November

? Empty GW - No one online/All my friends have left/ no one to play during the mornings
? Financial reasons ? Too expensive/Want it free/Can?t afford it
? Need to devote too much time to be good ? People on here all the time/not fair against the hardcore/ can?t play once a week to be successful
? Prefer FM - Don't like online/no real teams/not realistic
? Lack of things to do - Boring/ I want more to do/ repetitive/ I won everything now what?
? Multiple accounts ? Had two accounts don?t use them anymore.

You can see that in the main the new data from the last few months is reflective of the mood in the forum. We realise the roadmap doesn?t go far enough and the stats don?t lie ? we?ve decided to add the following:

Different flavours of gameworlds

One thing that we?ve realised over the last year is that people want to play Football Manager Live in many different ways and whilst we want to provide features that allow as many of these different types of manager to play together, this is often very difficult without being detrimental to one of the groups.

This is why we?re going to split the game into two different types of gameworlds.

Fantasy Players (newgen only)

This gameworld type will work essentially as they do now (with all the extra features from the roadmap of course!) and is aimed at the hardcore FML gamer/ MMO fan. The aim of the game is to take your club from poor beginnings and compete with managers from all over the globe in a variety of leagues and cups.

As you might have guessed from the title ? there will be NO real players in this gameworld, so there?s no searching the internet for the list of latest wonderkids to help you find the best players. It?s about scouting for unknown youngsters and training them up into superstars. It?s about tactics, and outwitting the opposition on the pitch. And it?s about proving that you are the best at what you do.

We are also looking to increasing the capacity in these gameworlds so that there is both more competition and more people online. Although we?ve not got an exact number in mind we?d love to be able to have 1500 managers or more in these worlds.

Returning Stars

Whilst the Newgen gameworlds are great for the hardcore gamer, not everyone wants to play the long term, rags to riches game and, as such, we?re looking to provide another flavour of gameworld. This type of gameworld is more aimed at the football fan, rather than the football gamer and is based around real and famous players.

Whilst the underlying mechanic of the game will be very similar to what we have at the moment the emphasis on this type is more about playing long term with recognisable players

But, ?what when these famous players retire?? I hear you cry! Well that?s where the clever bit comes in.

In essence the heart of the new feature is that any player that retires in the game will be able to be brought back in. In the interests of fairness and making older gameworlds more attractive the top rated retired players will be reborn (at the age they are in real life not as a youth player) and allocated to teams in a seasonal draft based on how well a team is doing or how long they have been in the GW.

This means that the newest teams and the teams lowest ranked will be allocated the best players in the draft. This draft will allocate one player per club per season from the best players yet to return.

If you can imagine joining a GW in its 12th season where Wayne Rooney has just retired; as a new manager in this GW you are guaranteed to have one of the top draft allocations so there is a good chance you?ll get Rooney (or a similar equivalent).

You have a few options at this stage and around a season to decide what to do. You can:

a) Keep the option on your player and he?ll sign for your club at the end of the season
b) Trade the player for someone else?s pick (this can be for cash, players or a mixture of both).

As well as ensuring that new players have an immediate opportunity to sign a quality player, it will also help keep the transfer market alive by allowing a more radical flow of money from top teams to bottom teams. If a top team wants to buy Wayne Rooney from the new team then they can make an offer and, if accepted, the new team could have a budget of potentially millions to aid their assault on the gameworld. In turn, we hope that this will help revitalise the market for mid-range players due to the extra spending power that new teams in the gameworld may possess.

In addition to the draft system, any new manager or anyone restarting will have the option to include any player who retired prior to them joining an older gameworld. There is no limit on how many of these players you can bring back in (except for the normal financial constraints). The process is transparent ? to a new user, it?s not even apparent they have had a career and retired. This additional system further ensures that you can start your team with familiar players.

This feature will be rolled out as part of 1.4 in January 2010 (those beta testers in Miller will get to see it this week).

We've a few screenshots to check out with the feature in action in Miller

Part 2 : Tomorrow

What about the current gameworlds?

Today we?ve spoken about lots of plans for gameplay, but one thing we haven?t spoken about yet is how we get from where we are now to this new system. Tomorrow we will cover this in detail and show you what we plan to do with your gameworld and how we came about making some of the key decisions.

We?ll be online and on the forums where we?ll do our best to answer all the questions you have about these announcements. We?ll also be appearing on next week?s Gameworld One podcast where Jordan and Millie will no doubt be grilling us on the plans and trying to put forward the main concerns from the community. Feel free to send any questions you have to podcast@gameworldone.com.

Q & A - Returning Stars

Q ? So which players will be returning each season?

A ? The system has two main parts to it:

1. The first part involves bringing back enough of the best players so that each team can receive one player. These players are known as ?Returning Stars? and the game decides who to bring back by choosing the most valuable players according to their acquisition fee (AF). The AF used is that based on their real-life stats.
2. The second part allows any manager joining a Gameworld late, or restarting their club, to be able to choose, additionally, from any players who have retired prior to them joining or restarting. This aims to better re-create the conditions that would have been in-place when a GW started and allow these managers a similar opportunity to the Gameworld founders.

Q ? How does the game decide who gets which player?

A ? Managers are prioritised as follows; the highest priority are managers who have just joined or who have restarted since the last returning star draft was made. The most recently joined/restarted manager is given the best player, the next most recently joined/restarted manager is given the second best player...etc. After each of these managers have been given a player, the game then allocates the remaining players to clubs according to their reputation, with the lowest reputation club receiving the best players and the highest reputation club receiving the worst.

Q ? What about players who were already old at the start of the GW?

A ? As things stand in beta, the game will only bring back players who originally retired after three seasons of the Gameworld had passed. This is to ensure that players aren?t allocated and then retire shortly after, however this is subject to evaluation and change.

Q ? How will this work with older Gameworlds? Will all the best retired players just come back one day?

A ? No. Where this feature is applied to an existing Gameworld, it will process in 3-month blocks. So the first draft (given the previous Q) will be players who retired during seasons 3-6, the next draft 6-9, then 9-12 etc until it has caught up, at which point it?ll just bring back players as they retire. This means that the first few drafts, while it catches up, will be of a generally higher quality of player.

Q ? How will the quality of the draft change over the seasons?

A ? By definition, the first players to retire at the start of a Gameworld will be the oldest ones, and thus the first drafts will generally have less valuable players as when they return to their real-life age they?ll still be pretty old. However, after 10 seasons for example, then a player retiring will be ?rewound? by 10 seasons so this is when you can expect to see the Rooneys, Gerrards etc come back. This means that the older a GW becomes, the more of a ?leg-up? a new manager is given when allocated a player.

Q ? Won?t all this distort the database though?

A ? What will happen is the average ability of all the players in the database will rise as players are recreated, but this will only last one ?generation? and then should hit a ceiling.

Q ? What about the effect on the youth market? How will the returning players affect my plans to develop and sell youth?

A ? Undoubtedly there will be an effect, and one possibility we are considering is to grant lifetime contract protection to players who you sign as a youth and bring through your club, thus retaining this route as an attractive way to play the game and retaining value in the fictional players which will still be created in this type of Gameworld.

Q ? So, I?ve been allocated my favourite player, Mikel Arteta. What happens next?

A ? You will first of all receive a new item to tell you that you?ve signed the exquisitely-skilled Spaniard, and he?ll appear in your squad in a different colour. At this stage, you hold a one-season ?Option? on him. An option is different to a full contract in that it does not allow you to play the player in official FA matches and does not cost you any money in wages. After one season, if you take no action he will automatically convert to a full contract on his basic wage demand.

Q ? What if I?m allocated a player I don?t want or rate?

A ? You have two options here. You could either waive your contract option, in which case the player is released and becomes a free agent, and by doing this you would give yourself a chance of being placed higher up in the draft next season (i.e. Potentially receive a better player). However, whether you ended up getting a better player would depend on which players have retired recently and how many other managers join/restart to be placed ahead of you in the queue. You can also continue to waive your contract options for repeated seasons, and work your way higher and higher up the draft list. This is a valid strategy. The second option you have is to sell your option. You can sell a player in this way exactly as you would with a player on a full contract, via the private bidding or transfer auction systems, including as part of exchange deals. A club who buys a player on a contract option like this is subject to the same restrictions on the player ? that is, zero wages, and he can?t play in official FA matches.

Q ? Why can?t a player I?ve been allocated play in official FA matches rightaway?

A ? We feel that if we allow this, then the danger is managers could ?try out? a player for a season, then decide they didn?t like him and switch to another Gameworld where someone better is about to be returned. We also feel is adds an interesting element of strategy to the game ? do you wait for the option to become a full contract, or do you cash in and build a team using the money you can receive? Also, since wages are tight for a newly joined/restarted team, having a one season delay before wages are paid gives a little time for the manager to plan ahead. In the meantime, the player can play in as many unofficial matches as you like - so you can try him out and get a better idea of whether you want to keep him.

Q ? Couldn?t someone cheat by deliberately ensuring their club performs badly, in exchange for a good allocation each season?

A ? It depends on if you look at this as cheating. Essentially such a manager would be exchanging any form of progress or success in the Gameworld for cash. Is that cheating? Or just a strategy? At some point, in order to progress, they would need to spend that cash. Further, they would still remain behind any newly-joined or newly-restarted managers in the draft each season. However, this is an area of the game we will be evaluating and discussing further.

Q ? So when does the draft take place?

A ? The draft takes place exactly as a new season starts, and can include any players who retired prior to the last draft. The reason we do it like this is so that once the draft has been done, and the players have been passed to clubs on these ?option? contracts then we can immediately start the provisional draft for the next season, but since it is based on retirements from the previous season, we know in advance which players are going to be in the draft. This will allow managers to preview who they might be receiving next season, and in addition will potentially allow Gameworlds to advertise this information for a full month and perhaps allow new managers a little bit more information when choosing which Gameworld to join.

Q ? What if a manager becomes inactive? Do they still get a player?

A ? The only criteria for receiving a player in the draft is that the manager must sign in at least once during the season before.

Q ? When a player comes back, will he have the up-to-date stats?

A ? The ultimate plan is that at the point these players are returned to the Gameworld, they are given the latest stats from our central research database. This means that a Gameworld that has been running for many seasons could conceivably have a more up-to-date Cristiano Ronaldo than one that was launched later, depending on the season Ronaldo decides to hang up his boots.

Q ? I don?t like it! It sounds too far-fetched and unrealistic. What are my options?

A ? This system of regenerating players doesn?t apply to fictional/fantasy Gameworlds, which are intended to appeal more to the ?purist?.

In yesterdays announcement we talked a lot about what gameplay changes we're making to the game. Today we concentrate on showing you what we plan to do with your gameworld and how we came about making some of the key decisions.

Too many gameworlds

As has been widely reported on the forums the amount of subscribers we have in the game is spread far too thinly across too many worlds. Fundamentally, our strategy for gameworld management wasn?t good enough. We saw that people wanted new gameworlds and, because the statistics for new orders and traffic on the website, backed that up, we didn?t foresee the long term effect.

As FML stands, we?ve been churning subscribers from the 34 worlds and we?re now unable to fill them back up because the perception is that people feel like they are not capable of competing in an existing world. This means that our subscriber base is now spread thinly and it continues to thin daily. This then has the snowball effect of more people deciding to leave because of the emptying gameworlds, which only worsens the situation.

During our analysis we evaluated a number of different options as to what we should do.

? Option 1: Keep everything ?as is? and attempt to fill up each world.
? Option 2: Keep active gameworlds and close all others.
? Option 3: Don?t close any worlds but encourage people to move to the active worlds.
? Option 4: Reset everything and start again.
? Option 5: Full merge of gameworlds

We came to the decision that the cleanest option, which was made with the best long-term interests of the game, will be to go for a full reset. This would involve the closure of all worlds and the opening of a set of concentrated new worlds. This will happen in March 2010.

We fully accept and understand that many of you will be unhappy with a reset as you?ve invested a lot of time and effort into your team and your community. We did explore Option 5 in a lot of detail (this was many of team?s preferred option) however there were a number of gameplay hurdles such as if we merged, how we would deal with two copies of the same player and how we would deal with the varied economies in both worlds. On a technical level we also had to consider the timescales and challenges involved in merging two or more databases together. Although not impossible, we decided that it would have taken too long to be able to do this.

The reset will involve you losing your skills and stadium. However, you will keep any reward points that you?ve earnt between 1.4 and the reset as well as any shortlists, tactics, views, filters and match plans that you have saved.

We understand what a major decision this is and of its implications but we feel that it?s the right thing to do in order to provide a stable, long term base for the game. As part of this base, we are also in the process of reviewing the price plans with a view to reducing the monthly cost of playing. A further announcement will be made on this before we reset.

We also hope that many people might be more in favour of a reset if we manage to do a few of important things:

Choice

Yesterday we talked about the different flavours of gameworlds that we will be launching after the reset. Once 1.4 arrives, all managers will be given a choice as to which gameworld they?d like to participate in, after the reset, when signing into the game. We?ll advertise in advance of this how many gameworlds there will be and what they will be called but you will be able to control where you go. We will also try to group people logically based on their current gameworld.

Elite gameworlds

As part of this choice we are also looking to introduce an invite-only, elite gameworld. This will be new-gen only and to get an invite you will have to be doing very well in your previous gameworld. You don?t have to take up the invite if you don?t want to, but if you do, you?ll be competing against the very best that Football Manager Live has to offer. Want to see how good a manager you really are? Then this is the place to be.

By being full of the most hardcore, dedicated and active managers, the elite gameworld should remain incredibly active with lots of managers online at any one time and have a buzzing transfer market and community.

Is this something you are interested in being part of? The original elite managers will be chosen depending on how successful your team is at the time of the reset in March, so there is still a lot to play for in the meantime.

Let?s Celebrate

A full reset means that all the gameworlds will start balanced but for us recognising the efforts of managers, especially those who are long term subscribers is vitally important. Many of you will have built up a club with a great history and will want to save a record of the many achievements you have made over the last 12 months. Well that?s where our brand new ?celebrating success? features will come in.

Whenever you change gameworld (not just over the reset), you will be able to take a record of how well you have done in your previous home in two ways:

1) Portable Manager Biographies

Every manager already has a biography in their gameworld, which in a few paragraphs, gives an outline of their achievements over the seasons. It will be improved and transferable with you to your new gameworld.

2) Manager Medals
In addition, we?re looking to expand on the current achievements system and create a brand new set of manager achievements in the form of medals. Many of you have been in your gameworld since the start, hopefully some of you feel like you?ve done really well, you?ve probably won a few competitions, been near the top of the rankings and maybe once upon a time you were the game world champion. The manager medals will recognise and reward all your efforts. These medals will again be portable between gameworlds and aim to serve as a reminder, to anyone you come across, that you?ve got an FML history behind you.

2 Free Months

In consideration for the above which we accept are major changes to the game, we would like to offer every single paying subscriber 2 months free. Starting immediately, if you are paying monthly for Football Manager Live, you?ll find that your next payment date will have been delayed by 2 months whereas if you?ve paid up front, you?ll find that 2 months playtime will have been added to your account.

We?ll be online and on the forums all day today and we?ll do our best to answer all the questions you have about these announcements. We?ll also be appearing on next week?s Gameworld One podcast where Jordan and Millie will no doubt be grilling us on the plans and trying to put forward the main concerns from the community. Feel free to send any questions you have to podcast@gameworldone.com.
